Phantom is the wallet most Solana DeFi users interact with first, and its own software has an established security track record — but its popularity also makes it the single most impersonated wallet brand in phishing attempts, which is the actual source of most Phantom-related losses. It’s a self-custody wallet originally built for Solana and now supporting several other chains, generating and storing your seed phrase locally on your device.
Phantom signs transactions for DEX swaps, staking, lending, and any other on-chain action, and includes built-in transaction previews that attempt to show you what a transaction will actually do before you approve it.
Phantom doesn’t charge a fee for basic wallet functions (holding, sending, receiving); its built-in swap feature adds a small fee on top of the underlying DEX route, separate from network gas — check the app for the current swap fee before using it.
Phantom has been the default entry point for a large share of Solana users for several years and is broadly integrated across the ecosystem’s dApps. That popularity also makes it the most common wallet impersonated in phishing attempts — the wallet’s own security has an established track record, but the surrounding phishing ecosystem targeting its users is significant and ongoing.
The wallet software itself is not where most Phantom-related losses come from — it’s phishing sites impersonating Phantom, malicious transaction approvals, and seed-phrase compromise. Always verify you’re on the official domain or using the real app-store listing, never enter your seed phrase into a website, and read what a transaction simulation actually shows before approving.
