Backpack

Backpack is a self-custody wallet for Solana (and other chains) that pairs standard wallet functionality with a more integrated trading and app ecosystem, including support for xNFTs — executable NFTs that function like mini-apps runnable inside the wallet itself — and a companion centralized exchange run by the same team.

What it’s for

As a wallet, Backpack does what any self-custody wallet does: holds your keys locally, signs transactions, and connects to dApps. Its differentiator is the tighter integration with its own exchange and app-store-like xNFT ecosystem, aimed at users who want a more unified trading and app experience without switching between multiple tools.

Reputation and track record

Backpack has built a meaningful user base since launch, particularly among more active traders drawn to its exchange integration. It’s newer than Phantom and has a smaller, though still substantial, track record as a wallet specifically.

Risk considerations

The same wallet-layer risks apply as with any self-custody wallet: seed-phrase security, phishing sites impersonating the real app, and reading transaction approvals carefully before signing. If you use Backpack’s integrated exchange in addition to the wallet, keep in mind that’s a separate, centralized product with its own custody and counterparty considerations distinct from the self-custody wallet itself.
